For my third video review I am giving you my gold nugget. Her name is Dr.Jane Goodall, and I had the privilege of hearing her speak in person when I was only 17 years old, just 8 years after she had published In the Shadow of Man. Dr.Jane Goodall is the famed anthropologist who worked with Dr. Louis Leakey and who discovered the inner world of the chimpanzee by living with them in the African forest. She has always been a personal hero to me, and I would never have dreamed that I would someday be in the position to help her carry out her dream of educating children about the importance of preserving our environment for future generations.
I learned about the Roots & Shoots program through my GATE classes with
Dr. Susan Daniels, who is a friend of Ms.Goodall’s. Scroll down to the bottom of the home website to watch the Vimeo in the bottom right hand corner titled “Why Roots& Shoots.” Then spend some time checking out the other videos in her website to see what is going on around the world in classrooms due to Ms.Goodall's efforts.
She also participates in Google chat rooms in which you can actually “be in the room” with Dr. Goodall. I was so excited when I first attended one of these chats, not just because of the content, but also because I felt it was quite a technological leap for me to make it successfully into the chat room! Go Kathy! Unfortunately, I did not know at the time that there would be so many of us in the chat room that I would not really
have direct access to ask her questions, but she might "chose" to answer your
posted question, and you can chat with others who are in the room. It was pretty
fun, and I will definitely go to the next one.
I am doing a Roots & Shoots PBL unit this year, and I will blog later in the when we get started. (We are doing a PBL on Spain right now. So many PBL ideas…so little time!) Enjoy the Vimeo!
